welcome
Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Fisher Park/Summit Alternative School! We look forward to having your son/daughter with us for Grade 7 next year.

A few important pieces of information that may be helpful to you as you look ahead to next year:

First of day of school: Tuesday September 4th. Students are to gather on the Basketball courts at the back of the school for 8:55, where they will be greeted and connected with their homeroom teachers (class lists will be posted by 8:40 on the fence by the courts). Our first few days include numerous orientation activities to ensure incoming students are off to a good start. Please watch for important permission forms and handouts that will come home the first day that need to be returned as soon as possible.

School Supplies and Fees: A list of recommended basic school supplies that all students should have access to for the year is available here... https://www.ocdsb.ca/cms/One.aspx?portalId=55478&pageId=237679. In addition, FPSA students must also bring a combination style lock to secure their locker. A $15 student activity fee will be requested the first week of school. These funds help provide access to additional learning materials, ensures each new student receives an FPSA t-shirt, and supports intramural and extracurricular activities to help promote student engagement.

Staying Connected: By grade 7 and 8 we frequently find that parents find themselves "out of the loop" with information from school coming home via kids backpacks. To combat this, please ensure we have up to date contact information (email, phone). We also encourage parents to join the Facebook groups run by the School Councils (https://www.facebook.com/groups/fisherparkparents/ and https://www.facebook.com/groups/SummitAlternativeParents/). Our school web site (https://fisherparkps.ocdsb.ca/) has a school calendar you can subscribe too, as well as out daily announcements to make sure you are never more than a click away from the info you need. Field trip forms are also posted to the site for your convenience and online payments for student fees and activities can also be made. An account in https://ocdsb.schoolcashonline.com will be needed (you may have done this already at previous schools)

Attendance: Good daily attendance (and punctuality) are essential to success in middle school. If your son or daughter is going to be absent or late for an appointment or other family situation, please email us (absentFPSA@ocdsb.ca) to let us know. You may also leave a voicemail if you prefer at 613-729-5062

Daily Schedule for 2018-19 School Year:
8:55 - 10:55: Morning Classes
10:55 -11:15: Nutrition Break
11:15 - 12:35:  Mid-Day Classes
12:35 - 1:35: Lunch Break
1:35 - 3:15: Afternoon Classes

Transportation: Students whose home address is more than 1.6 km walking distance from the school will be provided transportation by OSTA (Ottawa School Transportation Authority). In most cases this is in the form of a Presto pass (OC Transpo) that will be issued the first day of school. It is important that home addresses be kept up to date with our office to determine eligibility.

Special Education: A part of our transition work with Grade 6 schools in the community, FPSA staff will be receiving information about special education needs of incoming students. This information will be shared with teachers and updated IEP plans developed in early October to reflect student needs. Should you have updated assessments done over the summer, please drop off or email a copy to the main office so that that information can be incorporated.

Life-Threatening Medical Conditions: Should your son/daughter have a serious or life threatening medical condition that requires planning for, please ensure that relevant information is shared with the school. Should any medical interventions (e.g. medication, inhalers, epi-pens, etc) be necessary parts of their plan of care, please ensure to plan ahead for the required documentation (including doctor's signature on authorization forms) and medication provided to the office in September.

Additional Information: For your convenience, a copy of our complete student handbook which outlines rules and routines for students is available online:
Please note: The school office will be closed from June 28th - August 27th. If you have an urgent situation that requires attention during the summer, please feel free to contact the OCDSB directly (https://www.ocdsb.ca/contact_us)

Have a safe and happy summer!
