Preparing for the 2019-20 School Year

Preparing for the new school year

As we begin to gear up for the 2019-20 school year, we wanted to take the opportunity to welcome you all to (or back to) Fisher Park/Summit Alternative School. We are looking forward meeting everyone in a few weeks. Staff are busy planning our orientation week activities to ensure students get off to a great start. More information about what to expect for the first few days of school will follow via email during the last week of August.

There are a few important pieces of information to share about routines for September that you will want to familiarize yourself with.

Daily Schedule:
Our timetable for next year differs slightly from years past. The two breaks are now balanced in length (40 minutes each) to provide more opportunity for clubs, teams, and activities to run. The new schedule will also help minimize lost instructional time due to room changes during the day.

1st Block 8:55 - 10:55
Break 10:55 - 11:35
2nd Block 11:35 - 1:35
Lunch 1:35 - 2:15
3rd Block 2:15 - 3:15

Off Property Lunches:
In years past, FPSA has allowed Grade 7 and 8 students to leave the property at the Lunch break. For 2019-20 this privilege will be reserved for Grade 8 students only. We hope that by remaining on property during all breaks, Grade 7 students will get more involved in the wide variety of clubs, teams, and activities offered. Grade 7 students will have access to the Cafeteria, Library, Yard and supervised club meeting spaces during the breaks, but must remain within the fenced school/park boundary. Parents of Grade 8 students who wish for them to leave property during the second (Lunch) break, must send written permission for them to leave the property.

Personal Electronics:
As you may have heard in the spring, the Ontario government has announced that cell phones and other personal electronics be banned from classrooms. While we will still be working to educate students on the effective uses of technology, as a general rule, students will not be permitted to bring personal portable electronics (phones, mp3 players, headphones) to class. Students who do bring these devices to school must be prepared to leave them in their locker during the day. Unless given explicit permission by staff to use a personal device in an urgent situation, students must keep their devices "off and away" at all times on school property. In order to keep their property secure, students must bring a high quality lock for their locker. Combination locks that allow the password to be rotated/changed to something memorable are strongly encouraged.

School Routines, Rules, and Additional Information:
A complete copy of our 2019-20 handbook is available to be viewed online (Handbook Link). It covers many frequently asked questions about school routines. Parents and Guardians are also encourage to subscribe to our Google Calendar ( to keep up with events, and to consider joining the "Fisher park Parents", or "Summit Alternative Parents" groups on Facebook to connect with other parents.

School Supplies:
In order to simplify planning for parents, the OCDSB has a common list of recommended school supplies that help prepare students to be ready to learn. Parents seeking recommendations about what supplies their child should bring with them are encouraged to consult this list (List). The only additional recommendations specific for FPSA are a high quality lock for their locker, and an appropriate set of gym clothes (shorts, t-shirt, indoor shoes).

Important Dates:
August 27: School Office reopens
September 3rd: First Day of School
September 12th: Meet the Teacher Evening (6:30 pm)
September 25th: Picture Day
September 30th: Orange Shirt Day (Truth and Reconciliation observance)

Enjoy the remaining weeks of summer!
