Drumming Friendship Group

Every Tuesday at first break the group meets in the Kiln Room. We drum, perform (such as at the Remembrance Day Ceremony and the Holiday Cabaret), bead, take field trips, and are involved with political action. The students involved with the group guide what activities we do. We are always open to new members. On January 19th, we are going to Iskotew Lodge for a teaching with Algonquin Elder, Albert Dumont. On February 14, we will be attending Have a Heart Day on Parliament Hill (Fisher Park/Summit is the backup location in case of cold weather) - a child and youth-led reconciliation campaign that brings together caring Canadians to help ensure First Nations children have the services they need to grow up safely at home, get a good education, be healthy, and be proud of who they are.

Drumming Friendship Group

Supported both Ontario Treaties Week (https://www.ontario.ca/page/treaties) and Veteran's Week (http://www.veterans.gc.ca/iremember). We are fortunate to be receiving teachings from a FPSA parent with a personal connection to Standing Rock. We have posted to Twitter a song to share with the water protectors of Standing Rock. We will also be drumming in the audience to the Remembrance Day Assembly on Friday.

Quinte Mohawk School & Fisher Park/Summit Alternative School

With the moral and financial support of the Fisher Park Community Recreation Council, Fisher Park/Summit Alternative Public School enthusiastically invited Quinte Mohawk School to forge a friendship based on an appreciation for music and aimed at cultural understanding and respect.

Through a grant from the Rec Council, FPSA purchased 70 hand drums from Rober and Joywind Todd of Tribal Spirit Music. Thirty-five drums remain at FPSA and thirty-five were gifted to Quinte Mohawk School. David and Kim Maracle of Native Expressions agreed to act as a liaison between the two schools and facilitated the visit of FPSA students to Quinte Mohawk School.

David taught the students at FPSA a Mohawk song. A bond has been formed between the students at the two schools and the hope is that the relationship will continue to grow and flourish in years to come. Fisher Park/Summit Alternative staff and students, as well as the Fisher Park Community, are very excited to have this opportunity.
